Five year vision

In the next five years I 1. want to finish getting my degree 2. retire from my job, 3. start a new career, preferably a school counselor.
Last year I decided to return to school to finish getting my Bachelor's degree. I decided then that within the next five years I would be able to retire from my present job due to I would have the time but not the age. Then I would retire freezing my pension and get another job working with elementary school children. At the moment my plan seems to be rolling along just fine. By this time next year I would have completed the requirements needed for my Bachelor's degree. At the present time I'm researching just what is still required for me to be a school counselor. The only obstacle I see is the retiring. I've found out that the tier I'm in, in my present job doesn't allow you to vest your pension under the 25/55 program, so that means I would have to find another course of action. I can always change careers within the organization that I'm already in , maybe something in human resources department. That will also give me some experience in my major, while I continue my education working on my masters and getting partial tuition reimbursement from my present job. At times it don't seem as if its going to work out the way I plan, but if I have to keep revising it until I reach my goal, then I will. Right now everything's moving along, even the retirement, I can see it working therefore it shall.

Are you an employee of the City of New York? I am presently. If it is just the money in your pension that you are concerned about and not medical, maybe you can leave employment and roll your pension funds into an IRA or other type of investment? Explore this possibility with whoever oversees employee benefits. Additionally, it's always hard to change your career path, just stay focused on your goal and the reward from that will be great.

I totally agree with Deirdre. Time to get on the grind and go for what you want. It's not easy to just get up and start something new but with courage and dedication you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. And once you accomplish one goal you can't wait to accomplish the next one of the list.

You have a very determined goal that you are try and search for different means to overcome such obstacles. What are you doing right now? Are you working for a degree for education? Elementary teacher sounds like a profession. I remembered, once upon a time, i wanted to be an elementary teacher too. But I gave up that goal because I decided I am not too fond of children. I am sure you'll make a wonderful teacher/school counselor.

I think you'll get a way to vest your pension somehow, nothing is really set on stone and things will work out itself.

I hope that you will be able to accomplish your goals. I think that that was a good decision to return to college and get your Bachelor's degree. Realizing the dreams and have the will to accomplish what you want from your life is very important. I wish you all the best and good luck.
